My favourite podcasts

A little while ago we ran a series asking our artists about their favourite podcasts, and published the results. We loved doing it and it proved to be quite popular, so we’ve decided to continue. This time we’re going to be throwing our net a little wider, and asking some of our clients and other favourite people what they listen to in those little spare moments during the day that podcasts now fill for many of us. Moments like the journey to work in the morning, putting in a few miles on a cross-trainer at the gym or the half hour before we drift off to sleep.

So, let’s find out what they listen to.

This month, our first guest is: Lecture in Progress

Lecture in Progress provide a place for creatives to talk to other creatives, offering inspiration, motivation and insights into what they do and how they do it.

Ahead of the upcoming new season of their own podcast, Creative Lives – due to launch next week, the Lecture in Progress team have gone beyond the usual three recommended podcasts, to offer a broad selection under headings to fit in with whatever mood you may find yourself in. So, strap in tight…

If you want to hear super-smart friends chat about pop culture:

Still Processing by The New York Times

We especially recommend ‘Whoopi’, which is devoted to Whoopi Goldberg, as you may have guessed, and ‘Yeehaw’, all about rapper Lil Nas X and his song ‘Old Town Road’.

If you want to be inspired by people doing interesting work:

Ways to Change the World

A series of interviews hosted by Krishnan Guru-Murthy of Channel 4 News, talking to people as diverse as musician Jack White, Lord Michael Heseltine and revolutionary Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi.

Or our very own Creative Lives podcast!

For diverse perspectives on art, culture and current affairs:

Stance

Journalist Chrystal Genesis interviews such influencers of culture as choreographer Hofesh Shechter, campaigner Gina Miller, poets Fatimah Asghar, John Cooper Clarke and Kate Tempest and singer-producer Nao on topics like The Class Ceiling in the arts, beauty and Manchester’s LGBTQ+ story.

If you want to feel fully informed on the news:

Today in Focus by The Guardian

This also gives some great insights into the journalistic process.

If you’re in the mood for a good story:

Two classics that you’re likely to already know, but that rarely disappoint.

Modern Love by The New York Times

Originally a column, then a podcast, about ‘relationships, feelings, betrayals and revelations’.

This American Life

After being around for over 20 years, this is pretty exemplary in its sourcing of great stories. Favourite episodes include: 24 Hours in the Golden Apple – interviews conducted in a 24-hour Chicago diner, and Three Miles, which highlights injustice within the education system in the US, but feels pretty universal.

For an education on race and anti-racist activism:

About Race

Created by Reni Eddo Lodge, the author of Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race.

If you’re a die-hard Disney fan:

Inside the Disney Vault

Each episode is a discussion of a particular Disney film, offering a 2019 perspective on everything from the classics to contemporary titles.

If you want to hear weird stories from the web:

Endless Thread by Reddit and WBUR

Hosts Ben Brock Johnson and Amory Sivertson take a deep dive into some of the communities to be found on Reddit and the odd, and often revelatory, stories they tell.
