Trip to Tokyo

Matt has just returned from some time away in Tokyo. On his return, he found the space to chat to us about his impressions of the city, its culture and its influence on him.

What took you to Tokyo?

A plane.

Had you been before?

No, I’d never been before. It’s been on my list of places that I really wanted to visit for a very long time.

Was there anything specific you were looking forward to?

Just being somewhere visually totally new and different and trying to soak it all up, get inspired and excited.

What ideas did you have about Tokyo before you went?

That it would all look like Blade Runner, which in places it does…

Had it had an impact on your artistic life?

Yes, it’s been a big influence from childhood to present day.

Did it live up to your expectations?

It blew my expectations out of the water.

Did you get out of the city of Tokyo at all?

We spent some time in Tokyo, Nikko, Kyoto and Naoshima and then went back to Tokyo for a while.

Did you do any cycling?

I had planned to go riding with the guys at Rapha Tokyo but unfortunately the timings didn’t work out. Next time I’m there I will definitely make it happen.

Are we going to see any illustrations inspired by your visit?

Oh yes, I had a sketchbook by my side at all times.

What did you take away from the trip?

The towels from the hotel.

Are you planning a return visit?

Yes – I can’t wait to go back.

Are there any other places you’d like to visit soon?

One of my best friends is moving to LA in a few weeks, so that is now at the top of my list.
