Breed Presents Hugh Miller
Our guest on the latest edition of Breed Presents is Hugh Miller, art director, graphic designer, Pentagram Partner and major proponent of typography. We discuss Hugh’s passion for typefaces and how they have been a theme running through his career, from those he designed when working in-house for Nokia and Microsoft, to his work with Type Directors Club New York after co-founding BOND London.
He’s also on the board of the International Society of Typographic Designers. And, as one of his great passions is music, as we discuss, it’s no surprise he won their inaugural Freda Sack Award for his work on the record sleeve of SO/LO’s At the End of the World, Plant a Tree. Plus, he’s a university lecturer and maintains his own extensive design archive.
In our conversation we discussed a few publications, including graphic designer Karel Marten’s book Printed Matter/Drukwerk, Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones, edited by Courtney Sale Ross with an essay by Nelson George, the Nokia Design Team’s book Out of the Blue, Hubert Spencer’s influential graphic design journal from 1961 Typographica No. 3, and Victor Vasarely’s Op Art works of Les Tableaux Cinétiques.
