Our favourite podcasts

Once upon a time we used to have spaces in the day, perhaps when travelling to work, going for a run, sitting in bed, when we might spend some time reading a book, listening to music, or vacantly gazing into space, thinking about nothing in particular. Not any longer, nowadays many of us are filling that time with podcasts.

But there are so many podcasts out there, how do you decide what to listen to? We often go by recommendations from friends and colleagues. So, we thought each month we’d ask one of our friends and colleagues at Breed about which podcasts they’d recommend.

First up this month: Danny Sangra

How do you discover new podcasts?

I typically just search for specific things. Mainly interviews with directors, authors, actors and so on. And then occasionally friends suggest certain episodes.

Do you have favourite subjects that you seek out?

Interviews with film-makers and actors, mainly. I’m also a sucker for NY radio shows. A lot of the time I listen to various anthropology topics across different podcasts. Just subjects that catch my eye.

When do you listen to them?

Literally every spare moment. Walking from one room to another, in the gym, in the shower, while I work etc. etc.

Which three podcasts would you recommend?

  1. Studio 360

Hosted by writer Kurt Andersen, this is a New York based show that aims to ‘get inside the creative mind’. It has done this by interviewing the likes of Jonathan Lethem and k. d. lang as well as spending entire episodes looking at such iconic works of American art as ‘The Great Gatsby’ and Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue.

Find it here.

  1. How Did This Get Made?

Deconstructing ‘bad’ films new and old, including such misunderstood classics as ‘Xanadu’, ’Grease 2’ and ‘The Last Airbender’ with hosts Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas, plus whichever guests turn up.

Find it here.

  1. Bret Easton Ellis

For some years the bestselling author of ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Less Than Zero’ interviewed writers, directors, actors and musicians including Paul Schrader and Larry Clark in his podcast, which you can find at https://podcastone.com

More recently he’s switched to a subscription only version. If you don’t mind paying, you can find that here.
