James has illustrated an article appearing in the latest FT Weekend Magazine about a fascinating new way of working already underway at a Japanese company. No-one has a boss, employees choose which jobs they work on and no-one can give them orders. The catch is they work to earn Will, an internal company currency system, which is constantly draining from their account until they top it up with income from tasks completed. This system is already in operation for the 7,000 employees of Disco, an 87-year-old Japanese corporation. Dystopian future or the way we’ll all be working one day? You’ll need to read the article to decide for yourself. Though James’ images give a good idea of the purely transactional nature of the process.
