James Joyce – Illustrations for Rochester Review
175 years at URochester
This year, New York State’s huge private research University of Rochester has reached its 175th anniversary. Since 1922, the university’s magazine Rochester Review has chronicled the achievements of the university and wanted to do something special to mark this anniversary. They invited design agency Pentagram New York to help create a magazine that celebrates 175 of URochester’s major research breakthroughs across disciplines including science, medicine, psychology, technology, and the humanities.
Pentagram commissioned James to create 15 illustrations, some of which you can see here. Each is a visual metaphor for a specific advance made at the university, from the first total synthesis of morphine to researching exoplanets. You can see all ‘175 ways URochester makes the world ever better’ here.
Pentagram creative team: Luke Hayman, Jenny Hung and Shigeto Akiyama.
