Catherine Garcia – Two short films for Make Hauser & Wirth

Two new films for Make Hauser & Wirth

Catherine has made two new short films, plus stills, for Make Hauser & Wirth, the gallery with sites in Hong Kong, London, New York, Southampton, Los Angeles, Somerset, Menorca, Monaco, Zurich, Gstaad, and St. Moritz.
The first film focuses on artist-makers Helen Carnac and David Gates, and the second on ceramic artist Adam Buick. Music for both films is provided by Carlos Garcia.

Adam Buick’s work is directly connected to his environment, which is continuous and indivisible from the process and outcome of making. Based in South Wales, UK, Buick incorporates stones and locally dug clay into his work to create a narrative, one that conveys a unique sense of place. The unpredictable nature of each jar comes from the inclusions and their metamorphosis during firing.

This individuality and tension between materials speak of the human condition and how the landscape shapes us as individuals. Place holds a tangible presence in the work, touching all our senses, reaching into the imagination, and finding expression through deep and intuitive material knowledge.

Works by Buick will be shown in ‘A Part of Us,’ a presentation by Make Hauser & Wirth in Somerset, exploring two makers’ innate affinity with their environment, continuous and indivisible from the process and outcome of making. Vessels in clay and wood echo land and sea with traces and patterns real and mapped, evoking both the inner landscape of thought and the outer sensory experience of place.
