Catherine Garcia – Two short films for Make Hauser & Wirth

Two new films for Make Hauser & Wirth

Catherine has made two new short films, plus stills, for Make Hauser & Wirth, the gallery with sites in Hong Kong, London, New York, Southampton, Los Angeles, Somerset, Menorca, Monaco, Zurich, Gstaad, and St. Moritz.
The first film focuses on artist-makers Helen Carnac and David Gates, and the second on ceramic artist Adam Buick. Music for both films is provided by Carlos Garcia.

Artist-makers Helen Carnac and David Gates relocated to rural Somerset in the winter of 2020, having worked from their studios and workshops in London for more than 30 years. Carnac and Gates gather source material and visual imagery while they walk the surrounding landscapes. Both are drawn to human interventions in the landscape—agricultural structures, infrastructure—as well as the folds and textures of worked land.

Their work is grounded in observation, attuned to and embedded in places and topographies. Often working from the same sources, the way they each interpret this information differs once back in the studio.

‘Affinities’ presents works produced during a transitional period as Carnac and Gates resituate their working practices among new surroundings, gathering source material and visual imagery while they walk the surrounding landscapes. The exhibition features new works alongside a collection of resource, research, and contextualization materials assembled by the artists.

Make Hauser & Wirth is a dedicated space for contemporary making and the crafted object, with locations in Somerset UK, and Southampton NY. Works by Helen Carnac and David Gates are included in ‘Affinities,’ a presentation by Make Hauser & Wirth in Somerset, 8 July through 9 September 2023.
