Microstates

Two new pieces from Andy Gilmore have emerged that he’s titled ‘Microstates’. One definition of ‘microstate’ is, as you might expect, a very small state, like Vatican City. There is a second definition, though, which is part of one of the foundations of modern physics – statistical mechanics. And, according to statistical mechanics, a microstate is a specific microscopic configuration of a thermodynamic system that the system may occupy with a certain probability in the course of its thermal fluctuations. So, there you go.
