Return to Odesa

Yelena Yemchuk’s photographic book Odesa sold out almost immediately when it was published in May, which is why publisher Gost is now printing a second edition to be issued this autumn.

Until she was 11, Yelena lived in Kyiv, Ukraine, and was always fascinated by the stories she heard about the city of Odesa, which seemed to be a place of relative freedom in the Soviet era. It was only much later, in 2003, over 20 years after her family emigrated to the US, that Yelena was finally able to visit Odesa for the first time. In 2015, she returned and began to take the photographs that make up this book, a process that took four years.

Odesa is now available for pre-order from GOST Books, with signed and limited editions available. 20% of the proceeds will be donated to the charity Monstrov in Odesa.
