Personal best – Andy Gilmore
The latest edition of the new series where we ask Breed artists to select a piece or project of their own that holds a special meaning for them. It may not necessarily be the most successful or even their favourite, simply one that stands out for them as important in some way. We’re intrigued to see the choices made and the stories they may lead to.
This edition sees us talking to Andy Gilmore. Based in Rochester, New York, Andy works with seemingly complex geometric forms giving an impression of depth, space, and movement. He’s also a musician, and his pieces are often informed by the properties of sound and acoustics. His clients have included AMV BBDO, Nature magazine, Wallpaper*, Sphere Vegas, and Sony. But what will his favourite be? Let’s find out.
What piece have you chosen?
My favourite commission in recent years is the Alan Watts collection for Waking Up.
Why is it special to you?
In my early 20s, John Cage was my favourite artist/composer/philosopher. Through his work, I was introduced to Alan Watts and the ‘Way of Zen’ which had a lasting influence on my outlook on art and life. For my work to be associated with his talks is a true honour for me.*
*Waking Up is an app designed by neuroscientist Sam Harris to help you practice mindfulness each day through guided meditations and by exploring the ideas of philosophers and scientists. Those selected included the late esteemed writer and thinker on eastern philosophies Alan Watts. You can find out more and download the app here.
